Mary Lou Gervie is a Director with more than 25 years of experience in the accounting industry, including four years as a Revenue Agent with the Internal Revenue Service. Since joining Watkins Meegan in 1987, she has provided technical assistance and oversight for commercial tax matters including research, planning and compliance. Mary Lou has proven invaluable as an IRS liaison and represents the firm’s clients in tax and collection issues including audits, offers-in-compromise negotiations, installment agreements and state collection matters.

 

As a leader in the firm’s Forensic Accounting Group, Mary Lou has been involved with criminal tax matters, financial analysis and income reconstruction, as well as partnership dissolution and divorce issues, among others. She has significant experience conducting forensic accounting investigations for director and officer liability and white-collar crime cases and formulating calculations for criminal and civil income tax issues and domestic disputes.

 

She is a Certified Fraud Examiner, a Certified Financial Forensic and an approved investigator for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. She has testified as an expert witness in federal and state court cases.

 

Education, Memberships, & Recognition

Mary Lou earned an undergraduate degree in Accounting from the University of Maryland and a Master in Taxation degree from Georgetown University. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountant (AICPA), Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA), the Business Valuation and Litigation Support Committee of MACPA and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. She previously served as a member of the AICPA’s IRS Practice and Procedures and Tax Practice Responsibilities committees and as an editorial advisor for AICPA’s The Tax Advisor magazine.
